Project Protect is a student-led intervention program to educate young women in rural India about general women’s health, including topics on HIV/AIDS awareness and maintaining good mental health. Eight students from Cornell traveled to India during winter break in 2007 to implement this program at the Institute of Social Work (ISW) in Kolkata, the capital of the State of West Bengal.

» Goals:

  1. Informing young girls about 1) basic women’s health, from menstrual cycles to menopause, 2) HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, 3) mental health, including depression, anxiety, IPV, and rape
  2. Provide resources about doctors available, locations of HIV/AIDS clinic, and legal help and support for abused women
  3. Breech cultural barriers by encouraging questions, initiating discussions, and shedding reservations
